No time to read the whole post? Here’s some quick tips.
- Consider going during rainy season despite what you read online
- Stay in Roma – highly recommend La Valise (boutique hotel)
- Consider hiring a tour guide for a private tour of the city – no car rental needed and decent priced tours
- Consider a visit to San Jose del Cabo (less crazy and touristy than Cabo San Lucas). Eat at Tamarindos.
The Full Story…
We have been to Mexico before (Puerto Vallarta, Tulum, La Paz and Cancun) and given its proximity to California we made plans to visit Mexico City and Cabo San Lucas in July 2022.
As someone who checks the weather consistently I understood it was rainy season in Mexico City and saw several blogs saying to avoid. For us, the weather was 0% a problem and it ended up raining for about 10 minutes one afternoon.
MEXICO CITY
Getting There
We flew from LAX non-stop to Mexico City on Delta. Delta is one of my favorite airlines and they did not disappoint. On time with no issues! Upon arrival we took Uber, which was easy from the airport and getting around in Mexico City. At no time did I feel unsafe in this beautiful city.
Hotel
We stayed in the Roma district at a boutique hotel called La Valise. I cannot say enough positive things about this location and this marvelous hotel – friendly staff and amazing rooms. Breakfast is included and is delicious. I typically prefer smaller hotels compared to chains, but if you are someone who likes bigger hotels with more onsite amenities this one is probably not for you. We spent the first afternoon exploring the area by foot and experienced its history, beauty and greenery.
Activities/Food
If you decide to stay in Roma there is plenty to walk around and see. Lots of great tree lined streets. Make your way to Avenida Amsterdam. Highly recommend Huset for dinner. Beautiful setting and not so trendy that it is difficult to get into or extremely pricey. We booked a private tour with Jonas Vanreusel (found on Tours by Locals), who did a great job customizing our sites and taking us to lesser known places to see art and take in the city. Of course the pyramids are a must (although with all the vendors it does take away from the experience a bit).
CABO SAN LUCAS
Getting There
We flew from Mexico City to Cabo San Lucas on Areomexico. There are less expensive options, but flying is generally an area I will spend more on for quality/safety. Flight was great with no issues. We used Cabo Airport Shuttle. The vehicle was nice but we did have to wait a bit when we arrived so cannot 100% recommend. There are plenty of transportation options.
Hotel
We stayed at The Cape, A Thompson Hotel. The room was great and well appointed (loved the view and balcony) and although I am not a fan of large hotels, this one was very nice and I slept well. In all the hotel research I did, this hotel at its price point was a good choice for us.
Activities/Food
I recommend a visit to San Jose Del Cabo – it is less busy with less clubs and tequila shots which is now way more my speed. 😊 We took a cab and had lunch at Tamarindos. It was amazing – go there if you are in the area.
The food at the hotel was good (just expensive) but worth not having to go into a town for most meals.
